Artist Laura Loving is known for her colorful images of New York City. “A Mighty Woman with a Torch” was created for the 130th anniversary of Lady Liberty’s arrival from France. Lady Liberty has always been a global symbol of freedom. She has been a feminist long before women had the right to vote. The poem inscribed on her body has preached the benefits of inclusivity and acceptance, even when many of our citizens struggle to get on board.

The original collage that this limited edition print is based on was composed entirely from found and repurposed magazines, with painted details. The treatment of the material is delicate and precise. Laura hand-cuts hundreds of tiny paper elements to create the collage. She creates a textural and vivid image by layering and combining small pieces of colorful and patterned paper. The title of this image is a nod to the poem “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus, which is engraved and mounted inside the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. In Laura’s image, the words from Lazarus’ iconic poem swirl in the harbor water surrounding Lady Liberty.
