This original collage is composed entirely from found and re-purposed vintage magazines with painted details. The treatment of the material is delicate and precise. Laura hand-cuts and arranges 100s of tiny paper elements to create the collage. Her intention is to render a textural and vivid image by layering and combining tiny pieces of colorful and patterned paper. The title of this image is a wink to the poem “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus that is engraved and mounted inside the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. The words from Lazarus’ iconic poem swirl in the harbor water surrounding Lady Liberty.
