The Girl Scouts Visit Studio Laura Loving

A client asked me to host a studio visit for her daughter’s Girl Scout troop.  I said yes, of course, and rolled out the red carpet for these smart and creative young ladies from Lake Success, New York!

It just so happens that right around the same time, I was in the middle of the preschool interview process here in Manhattan for my daughter, Stella.  The one thing I kept hearing at open house after open house is “children learn through play”. So, I decided we would play and hopefully learn something while creating a few wonderful works of art.

My lesson plan was inspired by my latest series of paintings, Art Meets Words. We were going to attempt silk-screening! The group consisted of 10 girls ranging in age from 10 to 12 years old.  Here’s what went down….

  • We silk-screened the beautiful floral backgrounds
  • They each chose a word that had special meaning for their message
  • They created their own fonts to use as a stencil over the background
  • They stenciled their words on the silk-screened background

We put the success in “Lake Success”.  Their art turned out better than I ever imagined. Scroll down to see the lesson in play.
